What Is the SMDF EMERGE Grant?

The SMDF EMERGE Grant is a funding programme established by the Solid Minerals Development Fund, an agency of Nigeria's Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.

EMERGE is focused on helping promising mineral exploration and research projects overcome some of the financial and technical challenges that often prevent early-stage projects from progressing.

Rather than providing general business funding, the programme targets specific activities within Nigeria's minerals sector.

The programme aims to:

  • Support early-stage mineral exploration.

  • Generate reliable geological data.

  • Develop Nigeria's critical minerals sector.

  • Support mineral-processing research and technology.

  • Strengthen geoscience research.

  • Help promising projects become investment-ready.

  • Encourage private-sector investment in Nigeria's mining industry.

  • Promote local value addition within the mineral value chain.

The official programme describes EMERGE as a way of helping projects move from early exploration towards investment-ready and bankable opportunities.

Who Can Apply for the SMDF EMERGE Grant?

The programme is aimed at three broad categories of applicants.

1. Exploration Companies

Early-stage exploration companies can apply under the relevant exploration funding stream.

Applicants are expected to meet requirements such as:

  • Being registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

  • Holding a valid exploration licence.

  • Having credible geological information.

  • Having an appropriate technical team.

  • Providing a clear exploration work programme.

  • Providing the required tax and corporate documentation.

  • Demonstrating that the proposed project is at an eligible stage of development.

The programme is particularly focused on non-producing, early-stage exploration companies rather than established mining operations.

2. Universities and Research Institutions

Accredited Nigerian universities and research institutions working in relevant fields can apply under the Research & Development stream.

Relevant areas include:

  • Geology

  • Geophysics

  • Geochemistry

  • Mineral processing

  • Metallurgy

  • Mining-related disciplines

  • Applied geoscience research

Universities and research institutions will generally need to provide information about their institution, research team, proposed project, budget and implementation plan.

3. Master's and PhD Researchers

Postgraduate researchers at Nigerian institutions may also be eligible.

Applicants in this category may be required to provide:

  • Proof of enrolment.

  • Valid identification.

  • A research proposal.

  • A research budget.

  • Evidence of institutional affiliation.

  • A letter of support from an academic supervisor or qualified referee.

The research should fall within an eligible mining, minerals or geoscience-related area.

What Are the EMERGE Grant Funding Streams?

The programme has three major funding streams.

Exploration Stream

This stream is designed for grassroots and early-stage mineral exploration.

Eligible activities can include:

  • Geological mapping

  • Geochemical surveys

  • Geophysical surveys

  • Drilling

  • Assaying

  • Exploration activities aimed at establishing a mineral resource

This makes the stream particularly relevant to companies that have promising exploration prospects but require additional capital to generate the geological evidence needed to move the project forward.

Critical Minerals Stream

The Critical Minerals stream focuses on strategically important minerals and technologies that can contribute to Nigeria's industrial development.

The programme identifies critical minerals including:

  • Lithium

  • Tin

  • Tantalum

  • Nickel

  • Cobalt

  • Rare earth elements

It can also support innovative mineral-processing technologies that help increase local value addition rather than simply exporting raw minerals.

Research & Development Stream

The Research & Development stream is intended to support applied research that can strengthen Nigeria's knowledge and technical capacity in the minerals sector.

Research may cover areas such as:

  • Geoscience

  • Mineral processing

  • Geology

  • Geophysics

  • Geochemistry

  • Metallurgy

  • Critical minerals

The objective is to produce useful research and technical knowledge that can contribute to the development of Nigeria's mineral resources.

How Much Does the SMDF EMERGE Grant Offer?

One important point for prospective applicants is that EMERGE is not simply a general cash grant for businesses.

According to the programme's official FAQ, funding is structured as flexible, largely co-funded support for eligible project activities. Under the Exploration and Critical Minerals streams, grants can cover up to 70% of eligible project costs, with applicants expected to provide at least 30% co-funding.

Applicants should therefore carefully review the official programme guidelines before preparing their budgets.

Funding limits and eligible costs can vary according to the relevant funding stream.

What Can the Grant Be Used For?

The funding is intended for eligible activities connected with the applicant's approved project.

Depending on the funding stream, this may include activities such as:

  • Geological exploration

  • Geological and geophysical surveys

  • Drilling and assaying

  • Critical minerals exploration

  • Mineral-processing research

  • Applied geoscience research

  • Technical project development

  • Other approved project-related activities

The programme does not function as unrestricted working capital.

The official guidelines should be checked carefully to determine which costs qualify before an application is submitted.

What Documents Do Applicants Need?

Applicants should prepare their documents before starting the online application.

Exploration companies may need:

  • CAC registration documents

  • Tax compliance documentation

  • Valid exploration licence

  • Exploration work programme

  • Detailed project budget

  • Technical team profiles

  • Previous exploration data

  • Other supporting project documents

Researchers may need:

  • Proof of Master's or PhD enrolment

  • Valid identification

  • Research proposal

  • Research budget

  • Supervisor or referee support letter

  • Evidence of institutional affiliation

Universities and research institutions may need:

  • Evidence of accreditation or registration

  • Institutional profile

  • Research proposal

  • Principal investigator details

  • Research team profiles

  • Institutional approval

  • Research budget

  • Implementation and monitoring plan

Applicants should consult the official EMERGE guidelines for the complete document checklist before submission.

What Happens After You Apply?

Applications are screened against the programme's eligibility requirements before being assessed.

The programme's administration partner, PwC, manages application processing and eligibility screening. Eligible applications are then assessed on factors including technical merit, geological potential, development impact, strategic fit, financial planning and project readiness. Research applications are also assessed based on research excellence, innovation and relevance.

The indicative programme timeline states that reviews and decisions are expected in Q4 2026, with announcements of beneficiaries also expected in Q4.

EMERGE Accelerator Support

One feature that makes the programme different from a straightforward grant scheme is the additional support available to successful applicants.

Awardees under the Exploration and Critical Minerals streams are automatically enrolled in the EMERGE Accelerator.

The accelerator provides support in areas including:

  • Exploration best practices

  • Investment readiness

  • Finance preparation

  • Corporate governance

  • Compliance

  • Access to investors and off-takers

  • Technical development

This support is intended to help successful projects progress beyond the grant stage and become more attractive to potential investors.

Who Should Consider Applying?

The programme may be particularly relevant if you are:

  • An early-stage mineral exploration company in Nigeria.

  • Working on a critical minerals exploration project.

  • Developing mineral-processing technology.

  • A Nigerian university researcher working on mineral-related research.

  • A Master's student conducting eligible geoscience research.

  • A PhD researcher working on minerals, mining or related fields.

  • A research institution developing applied geoscience projects.

However, meeting one of these descriptions does not automatically guarantee eligibility. Applicants should complete the official eligibility assessment and review the programme guidelines before applying.
