Young Africa Innovates Grant 2026

Young Africa Innovates 2026: Apply for UNDP & Mastercard Foundation Grants, Incubation & Market Access

Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 Young Africa Innovates (YAI) Programme, an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.

The programme is designed to discover and support young Nigerians developing innovative solutions to real problems in their communities. Selected innovators can receive entrepreneurship training, incubation, mentorship, technical support, financial support and market-access opportunities to help turn promising ideas into sustainable ventures.

What is Young Africa Innovates?

Young Africa Innovates is a youth innovation and entrepreneurship programme created to identify, develop and scale innovative solutions led by young people.

The programme particularly seeks to reach innovators who may not have access to traditional funding, business networks, mentorship or other forms of entrepreneurial support.

According to UNDP, the first cohort received more than 9,000 applications, with 205 ventures eventually incubated and 815 work opportunities created.

For the second cohort, the programme is expanding its reach while continuing to support the development of youth-led businesses and innovations.

What Does the 2026 Young Africa Innovates Programme Offer?

Successful applicants should not view YAI simply as a grant application. It is a broader innovation development and business growth programme.

Participants may receive access to:

  • Innovation and entrepreneurship training

  • Business incubation

  • Technical mentorship

  • Business advisory support

  • Product and prototype development

  • Market-readiness support

  • Commercialisation assistance

  • Innovation networks

  • Strategic partnerships

  • Exposure to investors and financing opportunities

  • Opportunities to showcase their solutions

  • Support for developing a route-to-market strategy

The official programme also describes a pathway that moves innovators from identifying a problem through bootcamp, incubation and eventually market access.

Is Young Africa Innovates a Grant?

Young Africa Innovates provides financial support and financing pathways as part of its wider support package.

The main value of the programme is its combination of financial support, incubation, mentorship, business development and market access.

Who Can Apply for Young Africa Innovates 2026?

To apply for Cohort 2, applicants must meet the programme's basic eligibility requirements.

You should:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old at the time of application.

  • Be resident in one of the participating Cohort 2 states.

  • Have an innovative solution, idea, prototype or working solution.

  • Be addressing a genuine problem affecting a community, industry or wider society.

  • Be willing to participate fully in the programme.

  • Be ready to develop your idea into a sustainable venture.

The programme is sector-agnostic, meaning applicants from different industries and fields can apply.

Young Africa Innovates 2026 Participating States

Cohort 2 is available to innovators living in:

  1. Abia State

  2. Akwa Ibom State

  3. Cross River State

  4. Katsina State

  5. Niger State

  6. Plateau State

  7. Taraba State

Applicants must live in one of these states to qualify for Cohort 2.

What Types of Innovations Are Eligible?

One of the advantages of the programme is that it does not restrict applications to one particular industry.

Young Africa Innovates encourages solutions across areas such as:

  • Agriculture and agribusiness

  • Climate action

  • Renewable energy

  • Healthcare

  • Education

  • Manufacturing

  • Financial inclusion

  • Digital technology

  • Creative industries

  • Community development

  • Other development-focused sectors

The key consideration is whether the innovation addresses a genuine problem and has potential to create meaningful social or economic impact.

Do I Need a Registered Business to Apply?

No.

This is an important point for young innovators who have an idea but have not formally registered a company.

The official YAI application guidance states that you do not need to have a registered business to apply. Applicants can apply with an idea or solution that they have already started developing and testing.

You should, however, be able to explain:

  • What problem your innovation solves

  • Who experiences the problem

  • How your solution works

  • Why your solution is different or useful

  • What progress you have made so far

  • How your idea could grow

  • How it could create jobs or economic opportunities

What Will the Selection Team Look For?

Having an idea alone may not be enough. The programme's eligibility information indicates that reviewers will consider factors including:

  • Potential for job creation

  • Your experience with the problem

  • Whether the solution has a viable business model

  • Evidence or proof of concept

  • Scalability

  • Community impact

  • Willingness to improve the solution

  • Ability to work with others and co-create

This means applicants should focus on clearly communicating the problem, solution, customers or beneficiaries and potential impact.

Young Africa Innovates 2026 Application Dates

The official programme website lists the Cohort 2 application period as:

Application Opens: August 2026
Application Closes: September 2026

No Specific date fixed in September. Interested applicants should apply on time.

What Happens After Application?

The programme is structured in stages.

1. Application

Eligible young innovators submit their solutions online.

2. Selection and Assessment

Applications are assessed based on eligibility, the problem being addressed, the applicant's experience and the potential of the proposed solution.

3. Bootcamp

Shortlisted innovators are expected to participate in intensive training designed to strengthen their problem definition, business model and pitch.

4. Incubation

Selected ventures receive more hands-on support, mentorship and resources to improve their solutions and prepare them for real customers.

5. Market Access

Graduating ventures can be connected to markets, capital and strategic partners to help them grow beyond their immediate location.

Young Africa Innovates 2026 Programme Targets

The 2026–2027 programme has ambitious targets for Cohort 2.

The programme aims to:

  • Identify 10,000 innovations

  • Provide capacity support to 1,500 innovators

  • Incubate 400 ventures

  • Expand youth innovation ecosystems across the participating states

The programme also has an inclusion focus, with targets for strong participation by women and persons with disabilities.

What Should You Prepare Before Applying?

Before starting your application, it is useful to have the following information ready:

  • Your full name and contact details

  • Your state and Local Government Area

  • Information about your innovation

  • A clear explanation of the problem you are solving

  • Information about your target users or customers

  • Evidence of how you have tested your idea

  • A photograph or video showing your solution, where applicable

  • Details of what you hope to achieve through the programme

The official application guidance confirms that applicants can complete the application using a mobile phone and that progress can be saved while completing the form.

Important Tips for Applicants

If you are planning to apply, avoid treating the application as a simple request for funding.

Instead, clearly demonstrate the value of your innovation.

Explain the problem clearly

Tell the selection team what problem exists, who is affected and why solving it matters.

Show what you have already done

If you have a prototype, product, pilot project, customer feedback or other evidence that your idea is being tested, explain it clearly.

Think about sustainability

Show how your innovation could continue operating and potentially generate revenue, create employment or deliver measurable community impact.

Keep your answers simple

You do not need complicated business language. Explain your idea in straightforward English so that someone unfamiliar with your industry can understand it.

Why Young Innovators Should Consider Applying

For many young entrepreneurs, the biggest challenge is not simply finding money. It is knowing how to develop an idea into a viable business.

Young Africa Innovates addresses several of these challenges by combining innovation training, incubation, mentorship, technical assistance, financial support and access to potential markets and partners.

This makes the programme particularly relevant to young Nigerians who have promising solutions but need additional support to move from an early-stage idea or prototype towards a sustainable venture.
